UK kabaddi contest turns violent as rival gangs clash; 3 injured amid gunshots, sword attacks

THREE persons sustained injuries following a clash started between two gangs during a game of kabaddi in the UK on Sunday (20).

According to the police, one of the three injured in the incident that was reported from the Derby Kabaddi grounds at Elvaston Lane, Alvaston in Derbyshire, received serious injuries.

A UK daily said quoting witnesses that the man was reportedly shot at before being attacked with a sword repeatedly.

Videos of the incident that went viral on social media showed members of the rival gangs attacking each other with hockey sticks. Spectators,  who gathered at the venue for the game, were seen running for life as gunshots were heard in the background.

“We were called to a largescale disturbance in Elvaston Lane, Alvaston, at 3.51pm on Sunday. Three people have been injured, one seriously. They have all been taken to hospital,” the Derbyshire police said on X, formerly known as Twitter.

The situation was brought under control after nearly 20 police cars rushed to the scene. “There is a large police presence in the area and officers are expected to remain at the scene for some time. Anyone who witnessed the incident, or has any information, is asked to contact us quoting the reference 739 of 20 August,” the police said.

In a statement, Derbyshire Police said, “We were called to a large scale disturbance in Elvaston Lane, Alvaston at 15.51 on Sunday 20 August. Three people have been injured, one seriously. They have all been taken to hospital. There is a large police presence in the area and officers are expected to remain at the scene for some time.”

Local media reports said that the event on Sunday “brought together expert players” from around the country for the England Kabaddi Federation’s tournament featuring a series of fixtures.
