A 20-YEAR-OLD Delhi University student was arrested for allegedly murdering his parents and sister over domestic differences and a property dispute, police said.
The accused, Arjun Tanwar, killed his family members with a knife while they were asleep at their residence in Delhi’s Neb Sarai around 5am on Wednesday.
To create an alibi he went out at 5.30 am for a walk and returned home an hour later. He then called the police claiming his family members were killed while he was away.
The victims – Rajesh Tanwar, 51, a retired Army jawan, his wife Komal Tanwar, 46, and their daughter Kavita Tanwar, 23 – were found dead with their throats slit in their bed.
The police claimed the crime scene did not suggest ransacking or theft. When they checked the local CCTV footage of the area, they found no sign of any suspicious or forced entry.
Robbery was also ruled out as no household items were missing. The police did not find any dispute between the family and their neighbours.
Meanwhile, the police grew suspicious about Arjun, as some of his statements were contradictory.
He initially tried to mislead them, but during interrogation he broke down and confessed to the crime.
Interestingly, Arjun chose the day of the crime carefully – it was his parents’ marriage anniversary. Police said he did so to avoid suspicion.
He told police that his father was unhappy about his academic performance, and used to frequently scold him.
Arjun was studying BA Political Science and was a state-level boxer. He always felt neglected by the behaviour of his family members.
He felt deeply humiliated when his father recently scolded and thrashed him in front of neighbours.
He also came to know that his father had decided to give away their property to Kavita. This proved to be a tipping point for Arjun.
Police said Arjun first attacked Kavita, then his father and finally his mother.
