DAYS after their supercar got involved in a deadly car crash in Sardinia in Italy, Indian business tycoon Vikas Oberoi and his wife Gayatri Joshi, a former Indian actor, have returned to their home in Mumbai. They escaped unhurt in the accident that took place on a narrow countryside highway in the southern European country last week in which an elderly couple from Switzerland were killed. The deceased were travelling in a Ferrari that rammed into the Indian couple’s Lamborghini and caught fire.
The car Oberoi and Joshi were in skidded off the road and crashed. A camper van was also hit and it got overturned.
The Oberoi Group said in a statement that the Indian couple were safe and had returned to Mumbai. Vikas Oberoi is the chairman and managing director of Oberoi Realty, a developer of luxury and premium homes. Joshi appeared opposite Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan in the 2004 blockbuster ‘Swades’.
“Our chairman and managing director Mr Vikas Oberoi and his wife Mrs Gayatri Oberoi were in a multiple car accident in Sardinia, Italy early this week. They are safe and have returned to Mumbai today,” the realty group confirmed on Friday (6).
Earlier, media reports from Italy had said that Oberoi was under probe following the accident. An investigation was reportedly launched into ‘double road homicide’ meaning the Indian real-estate billionaire could face up to seven years in jail if found guilty in connection with the crash. It was also learnt that the police were investigating several videos that they have obtained from the site of the accident.
According to a report by CNBC-TV18 on Thursday (5), sources claimed there were no charges against Oberoi in the case. The share price of Oberoi Realty had slumped after the news about the accident broke but recovered on Thursday to end up 1.7 per cent at Rs 1109.70 (£11) a share.
The accident took place during a supercar tour featuring luxury vehicles parading from Teulada to Olbia.
The fatal moment came when the Lamborghini tried to overtake a camper van and the Ferrari steered sharply to overtake both the Lamborghini and the camper van at once. The calculation went horribly wrong and both the supercars hit each other and rammed into the van.
Pictures also emerged from the site showing the Indian couple looking at the damaged car and the crash site in disbelief.
