Days after Bengaluru sinks in heavy rain, it’s time for India’s capital Delhi, Gurugram

Schools were closed in parts of India’s northern state Uttar Pradesh and Gurugram in Haryana because of heavy rainfall on Thursday (22) and Friday (23). Private offices were asked to instruct their employees to work from home.

At least 13 people were killed while 11 were injured in incidents of lightning, and wall collapses in the heavy downpour in parts of Uttar Pradesh. Life was hit in Firozabad while schools were shut in Aligarh, Press Trust of India reported.

National capital Delhi received almost 41 millimetres (mm) of rain between 5.30 pm local time on Thursday and 8.30 am on Friday. Roads were flooded in several areas while traffic movement on key roads across the city. The Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway was affected and there were also reports of roads caving in and trees getting uprooted resulting in massive traffic snarl.

The weather department predicted more rain for the national capital on Friday.

The administration in Gurugram asked the private companies to work from home to ensure smooth repair work of roads and drains by civic agencies.

According to the district administration, Gurugram on Thursday received 54 mm of rainfall, with Wazirabad receiving the maximum 60 mm.
