INDIA was left shocked to learn on Wednesday (20) about yet another incident of a cargo vehicle mowing down a police officer — the third inside 24 hours!

In the latest tragedy that happened in Borsad in the western state of Gujarat, Raj Kiran, a police constable, tried to stop a suspicious heavy truck around 1 am but instead of pausing, the driver of the vehicle ran over him, leaving him critically injured. Raj later succumbed to his injuries during treatment. The driver of the vehicle, which bore registration number of the neighbouring state of Rajasthan, fled and the police later said that he has been identified and efforts were on to arrest him.

Also in the wee hours on the same day, a woman police sub-inspector named Sandhya Topno was crushed to death by a pick-up van during a checking in Ranchi, the capital of the eastern state of Jharkhand. Police sources in Ranchi said Topno was mowed to death while she was on a vehicle-checking duty after reports of cattle-smuggling reached the police. She was in charge of a police outpost. The accused driver was arrested and the vehicle was seized.

The murders of the police officers in Gujarat and Jharkhand took place a day after a top police officer was allegedly run over by a mining mafia truck in Nuh district of Haryana.

Surendra Singh, a officer of the rank of deputy superintendent of police, was investigating illegal mining when a truck that he tried to stop ran over him, killing him on the spot. One person was arrested later in day in connection with Singh’s killing following a brief exchange of fire with the police.
