INDIAN prime minister Narendra Modi on Friday (26) said Constitution Day should have been celebrated each year since 1950, the year the document came into force, to educate everyone about what went into its making. The Constitution of India, the most voluminous constitution in the world, was adopted on November 26, 1949, and came into force on January 26, 1950, the day celebrated in India as the Republic Day.

The Constitution Day has been observed since 2015 when the Modi government declared November 26 to observe the occasion by a gazette notification. It was first celebrated as a mark of tribute to India’s first law minister Bhim Rao Ambedkar, who played a pivotal role in the drafting of the document. It is officially known as the ‘Samvidhan Divas‘.

Addressing an event on the occasion of Constitution Day in the Central Hall of the Parliament, Modi said, “Constitution Day should have been celebrated each year after 1950 to educate all about what went into the making of the Constitution. But some people did not do so. He further added that this day should also be celebrated to evaluate whether what we do is right or not.

“During this ‘Azaadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’, it is necessary for us to move forward on the path of duty so that our rights are protected,” Modi said.

Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav‘ is an initiative of the Indian government to celebrate and commemorate 75 years of India’s independence next year.

Indian president Ram Nath Kovind, who is the country’s constitutional head, led the celebrations of Constitution Day at the Central Hall.
