Congress remembers Indira Gandhi on 37th death anniversary

THE Indian National Congress and many of its leaders on Sunday (31) paid tributes to former Indian prime minister Indira Gandhi on her 37th death anniversary.

Former Congress president Rahul Gandhi recalled Indira, his grandmother, as a great example of women power while paying floral tributes to her at her memorial ‘Shakti Sthal’ in New Delhi.

Indira Gandhi served as the prime minister between 1966 and 1977 and 1980 and 1984 when she was gunned down by her Sikh bodyguards in the wake of a crisis in the northern Indian state of Punjab. She was the daughter of Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first prime minister.

Tributes paid to former home minister Sardar Patel on 146th birth anniversary

“My grandmother served the country fearlessly till the last moment — her life is a source of inspiration for us,” Rahul Gandhi said in a tweet in Hindi. “A great example of women power, humble tributes to Indira Gandhi on her martyrdom day,” he added.

Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also tweeted remembering the former prime minister in which she posted a picture of her playing with her grandmother in her childhood. She wrote in Hindi, “Your life is a message of courage, fearlessness and patriotism. Your life is a message to keep fighting for justice while following the path of ideals.”

The Congress also lauded the contribution of Indira Gandhi, the only woman prime minister India has had till date, to the country.

“She represented strength. She epitomised sacrifice. She personified service. A billion salutes to the Iron Lady of India, our very first woman Prime Minister, a true Bharat Ratna, Smt. Indira Gandhi, on her death anniversary,” the Congress said on the microblogging site.

Senior Congress parliamentarian Shashi Tharoor, too, shared a picture of the former prime minister on Twitter and wrote: “Remember The Martyr.”

Indian prime minister Narendra Modi also remembered Indira Gandhi, tweeting, “On her death anniversary, paying tributes to India’s former Prime Minister, Smt. Indira Gandhi Ji.”
