Indira Gandhi served as the prime minister between 1966 and 1977 and 1980 and 1984 when she was gunned down by her Sikh bodyguards in the wake of a crisis in the northern Indian state of Punjab. She was the daughter of Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first prime minister.
