Megastar Chiranjeevi has sparked controversy after making comments that many have labeled as sexist. During a recent pre-release event for Brahma Anandam, where he was the chief guest, the veteran actor expressed his desire for a grandson to continue the family legacy. His remarks did not sit well with many on social media, leading to a heated debate about gender bias and regressive mindsets.
Chiranjeevi, while speaking at the event, likened his home environment to that of a ladies’ hostel, as he is surrounded by women. He jokingly referred to himself as a “warden” and expressed his hope that his son, actor Ram Charan, would have a boy next time.
“When I’m at home, it doesn’t feel like I’m surrounded by my granddaughters; it feels like I’m a ladies’ hostel warden, surrounded by ladies all around. I keep wishing and telling (Ram) Charan, at least this time, have a boy so that our legacy continues, but his daughter is the apple of his eye…” said Chiranjeevi.
He further added: “I’m scared that he might have a girl again.”

Ram Charan and his wife, Upasana, welcomed their daughter, Klin Kaara, in June 2023. Chiranjeevi, who has two daughters—Sreeja Konidela and Sushmita Konidela—also has four granddaughters.
The remarks did not sit well with social media users, who criticized the veteran actor for perpetuating outdated gender norms. Many pointed out that in 2025, such an obsession with a male heir reflects a problematic societal mindset.
One user on X (formerly Twitter) wrote: “The post highlights an issue that’s unfortunately still prevalent in 2025. It’s disheartening to see someone of Chiranjeevi’s stature perpetuate outdated gender biases. The obsession with a male heir is not only disappointing but also a reflection of a societal mindset that needs urgent change.”
Another user expressed frustration, stating: “Chiranjeevi, with his influence, he could be advocating for equality and breaking these stereotypes, yet here we are, discussing his fear of having another granddaughter. It’s time to evolve, to recognize that every child, regardless of gender, is a blessing and contributes equally to legacy.”

One more comment highlighted the irony of his statement: “His granddaughter could also take his legacy forward. He only has to look at how his daughter-in-law and her siblings are successful in taking Apollo forward or Ashwini Dutt’s children. Regressive thinking.”
A viral post summarizing the outrage read:
“Chiranjeevi is scared his son Ram Charan might have another daughter 😡 In 2025, the obsession with a male heir continues. Disappointing, but not surprising.”
The issue struck a chord with many parents, especially mothers of daughters, who shared their own experiences of facing similar societal pressure to have a son. The backlash has reignited discussions about gender bias in India, especially within influential families and the entertainment industry.
Chiranjeevi has not yet responded to the criticism, but the controversy continues to spark debates about how public figures should use their influence to promote progressive values.
