Rumours, so what? Indians already celebrating Xi Jinping ‘house arrest’: ‘Xi Jing Ping. Gone’

The virtual world was abuzz on Saturday over rumours that Chinese president Xi Jinping, one of the most leaders that the Asian power has seen in history, was put under house arrest after being removed by the Chinese Communist Party as the head of the People’s Liberation Army.

The rumours were made stronger by reports and claims that several flights across the country were cancelled earlier this week for unknown reasons and that military vehicles were rushing towards Beijing.

The claims were yet not verified but reactions came in thick and fast over the speculations that Xi has been put under house arrest (one tweet even said that he was removed as the president). Reactions were particularly pouring in from India, China’s southern neighbour with which it shares a not-so-smooth relationship and often engages in border conflicts.

Recently, Indian prime minister Narendra Modi shared the stage with president XI at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Samarkand in Uzbekistan but they did not speak, fuelling speculations that all was not well. It was the first time that the two leaders came face to face since the two countries’ troops had a horrible clash in eastern Ladakh in June 2020.
