Lakhbir Singh Landa, a gangster from Canada, has taken the responsibility for the murder of Sudhir Suri, a leader of India’s Shiv Sena political party, in Amritsar in the northern state of Punjab on Friday (4), according to a report in The Tribune.
The report said Landa claimed responsibility in a social media post. The police were tightlipped over any development in the case and said they were examining the post’s authenticity.
Though the police officials were tightlipped over any development in the case, a police official said they were checking the authenticity of the social media post.
The 58-year-old Hindu right-wing leader was shot outside a temple in a busy street in the city in an attack that was captured on cameras. Dozens of police officers were around him when the incident happened. He was taken to a hospital where he succumbed to injuries.
The body of Suri was taken for post-mortem on Saturday (5) and security was tightened hours before the procedure started, reports added.
Punjab director general of police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav on Friday said all angles and conspiracies into the murder will be thoroughly investigated, DNA reported.
The DGP also said that they arrested one person in connection to the incident and booked a case of murder under section 302 of the Indian Penal Code. He also said that Suri’s family will be provided police security and the law-keepers will focus on maintaining peace and harmony in the area.
