RENOWNED actor Kamal Haasan announced that he is renouncing all titles and honorifics, including ‘Ulaga Nayagan’ (Universal Hero), that have been conferred upon him over his career.
Haasan, who is also the president of the political party Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM), has expressed gratitude for the accolades but said he prefers to be known simply as Kamal Haasan or KH.
In a statement, Haasan shared his thoughts on the importance of remaining grounded as an artiste, emphasizing that no individual should be elevated above cinema itself.
“I prefer to remain grounded, constantly aware of my imperfections and my duty to improve. Hence, after considerable reflection, I feel compelled to respectfully decline all such titles or prefixes,” he stated.
Haasan also acknowledged the meaningful titles bestowed upon him over the years, including ‘Kalai Gyani’ (genius in the arts) and ‘Nammavar’ (our man), which were offered by colleagues, fans, and MNM supporters.
He described cinema as a collaborative art form and expressed his desire to continue learning from it. “I am only a student desirous of learning more and more from that art (cinema) and evolve. Like other art forms, cinema is also for all,” he noted, adding that it reflects the diversity of human experiences.
Expressing humility, Haasan concluded by thanking everyone for their gestures of kindness and support over the years.
“Please know that this decision comes from a place of humility and a desire to remain true to my roots and purpose, to always be one among all of us – the lovers of this beautiful artform.”
