BRITISH-INDIAN yoga prodigy Ishwar Sharma has won the gold medal at the European Yoga Sport Championship 2023 in Malmo in Sweden. The championship was conducted by the International Yoga Sports Foundation, Lausanne, Switzerland, in collaboration with the Swedish Yoga Sport’s Association on November 18 and 19.
The 13-year-old, who represented the UK at the championship, had earlier won five world championships and received the Points of Light Award from former prime minister Boris Johnson in 2021 besides the British Citizen Youth Award at the House of Lords in 2018 for his contribution towards yoga.
He has also won three gold medals at the 5th Yoga World Cup & Festival event held in Canada, which was organised by the country’s yoga ministry.
Ishwar’s interest in yoga started when he was only three. The boy from Sevenoaks, Kent, used to emulate his father who did yoga and learned the basics fast. During the pandemic, the teen even taught children from across the world the art of yoga. He is passionate about spreading the message of yoga among children, especially those with special needs.
Along with his father, Dr Vishwanath, Ishwar runs IYoga Solutions to spread the word about Yoga and its many benefits in the UK.
“Ishwar is passionate about spreading the message of Yoga especially for special needs children,” his family said in a statement, with reference to his autism and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.
He is happy that yoga is becoming popular in the UK over the years besides in other parts of the world. He believes celebrating yoga on the International Day of Yoga on June 21, a date suggested by Indian prime minister Narendra Modi, every year has helped its cause globally.
