GREEK officials have said that the body of a man has been found on the island of Symi and he is believed to be British doctor and television presenter Michael Mosley who went missing following a coastal hike on the island.

Speaking to The Guardian, Nikitas Grillas, the island’s deputy mayor, the body was found in the Ayia Marina area and confirmed that it is the British national who was born in Kolkata (then Calcutta) in India in 1957.

The discovery of the body took place on the fifth day of a big operation on air, land and water to trace the health guru who was behind the popularity of intermittent fasting and designed the 5:2 diet.

He was last seen while walking along St Nikolas beach on the Greek island around 1.30pm local time on June 5. The island has been facing extreme heat conditions of late.

His wife, Dr Clara Bailey, alerted the authorities after Mosley did not return by 7.30 pm. The search operation was subsequently launched to find the doctor who is known for his appearances on The One Show and This Morning.

The search teams included, besides police officers and firefighters, specially trained dogs and volunteers. A drone was also used. Police were assuming that Mosley might have been affected by the heat and fell, perhaps from an altitude, The Guardian report added.

A sniffer dog, Scar, which is specially trained to locate humans in remote areas, was also roped in to find the missing person, The Mirror reported.

Mosley made many documentaries about diet and exercise, including the Channel 4 show Michael Mosley: Who Made Britain Fat?

He also worked as part of the BBC series Trust Me, I’m a Doctor.

The doctor once lived with tapeworms in his guts for more than a month for the documentary Infested! Living With Parasites on BBC Four.

Mosley was praised for the growing popularity of the 5:2 diet, which involves fasting for two days a week to lose weight.

The British Medical Association named him the medical journalist of the year in 1995.
