A NEWLY married man stole headlines on social media recently after a video showing him lifting his bride on his shoulder to carry her across a monsoon river in spate saw quick circulation. The incident happened in Kishanganj district of the North Indian state of Bihar. The entire locality has been flooded by the Kankai river which has swollen in the monsoon season.
The groom, Shiv Kumar Singh, was reportedly returning with his relatives from his marriage from a nearby village located on the other side of the river. After the wedding ceremony concluded, Singh boarded a boat with his wife and other relatives. But it got stuck in the mud after travelling some distance.
Singh and his bride, who were still in their wedding dresses, then had to be adventurous to reach home. He said they had no option but to travel by boat to a dry place on the river bank. “So, I immediately decided to travel the distance carrying her on my shoulder,” he said.
Groom’e relatives slam state government
His relatives were angry with the administration for the plight of the local residents in crossing the river. Rahul Singh, a relative of the groom, said a bridge on the Kankai river was proposed a decade ago but still the people of Kishanganj and adjoining districts are forced to use boats to cross the water body. He also called the state government callous and slammed Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar who ruled Bihar for most part of the last 16 years over his government’s claims of development.
