ACTOR Bhumi Pednekar, known for addressing social issues through her films, has expressed her desire to create a movie focused on climate change — an issue she considers the most pressing challenge of our times.
Speaking at the World Economic Forum (WEF) Annual Meeting in Davos, where she was recognised as a Young Global Leader, Pednekar highlighted the importance of addressing climate issues both on and off-screen.
Pednekar’s initiative, “Climate Warrior,” actively promotes sustainable living through practices such as garbage segregation, rainwater harvesting, and recycling.
She is also the National Advocate for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
“From the beginning of my career, I have tried to do such stories that can make our society better and positively change the thinking of the people. Off-screen, I want to leave a better environment, a better society, and a better planet for future generations,” she said.
On her role as a journalist in the film “Bhakshak”, Pednekar noted the challenges and integrity required in journalism, calling it a “job of courage.”
She added, “It felt great to play the role of a journalist, and I felt we belong to the same fraternity and ecosystem. I had never realized you need a lot of passion and in-depth study to do journalism.”
The actor also emphasised the transformative potential of artificial intelligence (AI) in democratising films.
While acknowledging concerns about job displacement, Pednekar stated, “I strongly believe it can democratise our films and our stories because it can give a big boost to productivity and remove the mediocrity. AI is not corrupt or regressive as of now and can help create a more equal world.”
Looking ahead, Pednekar hopes to represent Indian culture globally by working in Hollywood while continuing to act in Indian films.
“I want to represent my culture at an international level as I am a proud Indian and a very patriotic person,” she said.
