With heavy rain on Sunday (4) leaving life out of gear in Bengaluru, India’s information technology (IT) capital and citizens still struggling to recover, top IT companies such as Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and Wipro have taken to round-the-clock monitoring of the situation to ensure that business activities are not hampered and safety of the employees.
IT employees across the city had great difficulty in reaching offices as several areas of the city were submerged. Boats and even tractors were found in action to ferry IT employees to reach their work destinations.
According to a report by Moneycontrol, while Wipro has invoked plans to continue business, TCS asked its delivery teams to take full care of delivery.
“Due to heavy rainfall in Bangalore, Wipro has advised its employees to work from home today. Business Continuity Plans have been invoked and there has been no disruption to business. We are closely monitoring the situation,” Moneycontrol quoted a Wipro spokesperson as saying.
“All our associates at Bengaluru are safe. We are closely monitoring the situation and our delivery teams have been advised to exercise due caution,” a TCS spokesperson was quoted as saying.
A source close to HCL Technologies told the publication on the condition of anonymity, “HCL is still following the hybrid work model, giving the choice to the employees whether they want to come to office. So they get to choose depending on the situation. The company too is currently observing the situation.”
Business executives such as founders of start-ups like Unacademy and UpGrad shared on social media their stories of taking tractors for evacuating family members and pet dogs and going to work.
Basavaraj Bommai, the chief minister of Karnataka, said his government has taken the problem as a challenge. He said while Rs 1,500 crore (£163 million) for the development of stormwater drains, another Rs 300 crore (£33 million) would be used for making concrete structures along the drains so that the flow of water is not obstructed.
