BARUN SOBTI’S acting career began with little preparation, but his determination led him from corporate life to television stardom.
He landed his first acting role in the TV show “Shraddha” in 2009, despite having no formal training in acting or filmmaking.
Reflecting on his early days, Sobti admits, “I should’ve done that (preparation before starting acting) and that’s why my first show was really bad.”
Sobti, best known for his role in “Iss Pyar Ko Kya Naam Doon” and web series like “Kohrra” and “Asur,” had started his career as a corporate professional.
Before making the shift to Mumbai, Sobti was still in Delhi, having done some modelling gigs. He recalls selling a piece of land to fund his move, giving himself six months to try acting. “I thought there was an opportunity for me to give it a shot for six months,” he shared.
After signing the contract for “Shraddha,” Sobti informed his company’s CEO, who generously allowed him to leave without hassle.
When the show took six to seven months to take off, Sobti stayed afloat using the gratuity his boss had given him.
During this time, Sobti experienced challenges, such as crowded audition rooms and a lack of an agent. He managed to land a commercial that helped him financially.
“I salute the courage of the people who go there every day,” he said, recalling how competitive the industry can be.
Looking back on his career, Sobti says luck plays a significant role in success, along with talent and preparation. He spent years honing his craft, learning about editing, direction, and other aspects of filmmaking. “Talent alone is not enough, luck matters a lot,” he remarked.
Sobti is currently working on a new project, “Ek Kathay,” where he plays a Sikh character. He also has season two of “Kohrra” and an untitled project lined up.
