All the victims, aged between 45 and 55, were strangulated and left in fields, with no signs of sexual assault, and all murders happened around noon. The police suspect it could be the handiwork of a serial killer.

The state police chief told the daily that the police have been investigating these cases for six months and suspect the possibility of a serial killer.

The police had initially arrested three people, but now they feel they might not be the real culprits as the killings continued even after they were put behind bars.

The police are checking the details of prisoners recently released or granted bail.

The first killing happened in June last year and by November the body count rose sharply to eight. The latest killing happened on July 3 this year.

Villagers live in fear as the killer continues to be on the loose and police investigations have not made any headway.
