Amid reports of alleged targeted attacks on people from the northern Indian state of Bihar in his state, MK Stalin, chief minister of the southern state of Tamil Nadu, on Saturday (4) vowed to protect migrant workers from other parts of the country.

In a statement, Stalin said, “Migrant workers need not fear. If anyone threatens you, call on the helpline. Tamil Nadu government and people will stand to protect our migrant brothers.”

Officials of both states have tried to tackle reports of targeted attacks on migrant workers from Bihar by warning against spreading rumours which has created panic among the workers. Heated scenes were also witnessed in the assembly of Bihar over the them.

NDTV cited sources in the office of the Tamil Nadu chief minister as saying that officials from Bihar said they would meet the migrant workers along with their counterparts from the southern state.

Law-keepers in both states were closely monitoring the social media to check rumours about targeting migrant workers from Bihar. It was also learnt that fake messages were doing rounds on WhatsApp, triggering the panic.

District administrators in Tamil Nadu have assured the migrant workers and asked them not to get scared.

Nitish Kumar, the chief minister of Bihar, met his government’s top officials where it was decided that a team would be sent to Tamil Nadu for boosting confidence-building measures. His deputy Tejaswi Yadav lashed out at the Bharatiya Janata Party, which is in opposition in Bihar, over creating ruckus and asked it to ask the country’s home ministry, which is led by Amit Shah, to get the matter probed.
