At least 4 dead, 30 injured as train gets derailed in India’s Bihar: ‘Will find root cause’

REVIVING the dreadful memories of June 2 when three trains, including two speeding passenger ones, collided in the eastern Indian state of Odisha killing nearly 300, a train got derailed in Bihar, another eastern state, on Wednesday (11), resulting in the death of at least four persons. Thirty people were reportedly injured.

According to an official, the accident took place near Raghunathpur railway station in the state’s Buxar district around 9.35 pm local time. The ill-fated train, the North East Express, which was going from Delhi to Kamakhya near Guwahati in the north-eastern state of Assam.

Federal minister Ashwini Kumar Choubey told Indian channel NDTV that officials of the national and state disaster response forces reached the spot for rescue and relief. He said the injured would be taken to a top hospital in Patna, the capital of Bihar.

Tejashwi Yadav, deputy chief minister of Bihar, said he spoke to various departments of the state government and officials of the local administration to quicken relief work.

The office of Himanta Biswa Sarma, chief minister of Assam, said it was “closely monitoring the unfortunate derailment” of the train.

Indian railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw condoled the deaths on X and said the railway ministry will find out the root cause of the accident.

Prime minister Narendra Modi’s office quoted him as saying, “Pained by the loss of lives due to the derailment of a few coaches of the North East Express. Condolences to the bereaved families. I pray for a quick recovery of the injured. Authorities are providing all possible assistance to all those affected.”
