At least 12 killed as bus falls into gorge in India’s Maharashtra, 27 injured

At least 12 people were killed while 27 got injured after the bus they were travelling in fell into a gorge on the old highway between the cities in Mumbai and Pune in Raigad district of the western Indian state of Maharashtra early on Saturday (15), police said.

The ill-fated bus was carrying members of a traditional music troupe from Pune to Mumbai when it met with the accident near a temple on the highway around 4.50 am local time, the police sources added.

“The bus was carrying members of ‘Baji Prabhu Vaadak Group’ from Mumbai’s Goregaon. They were returning to Goregaon after taking part in an event in Pimpri Chinchwad area in Pune district. The bus had left the venue around 1 am on Saturday,” a senior police officer told the PTI, adding that at least 12 were killed and 27 others injured.

The deceased and the injured belonged to Sion and Goregaon in Mumbai and Virar in neighbouring Palghar district, Raigad superintendent of police (SP) Somnath Gharge said.

The injured were undergoing treatment at the nearby Khopoli rural hospital, he said.

Additional SP Atul Zende said the dead and the injured were between 18 and 25 years of age.

A team of local police and a trekker’s group are currently engaged in the rescue operation, police said.

Maharashtra chief minister Eknath Shinde visited the accident spot and met the injured in hospital.
