ASHWIN RAMASWAMI, a 24-year-old former Indian-American software engineer running for a US state election, is way ahead of his competition in raising funds to support his campaign with a total of over $280,000 (£224,375), news agency Press Trust of India reported.

In the filing period of February 1-April 30, Ramaswami, who is the first Gen Z (typically born between mid-to-late 1990s and early 2010s) Indian-American running for a US state legislature, raised more money than his opponent Shawn Still. He has received more than $146,000 (£116,996), while Still just got $6,400 (£5,129).

Both are competing for a seat in the Georgia state senate from the 48th district. Still from the Republican Party is currently representing the seat.

PTI cited sources from Ramaswami’s campaign revealing that he has raised over USD 280,000 and has USD 208,000 cash in hand.

Son of Indian immigrants, Ramaswami gave up his job in the IT sector and highlighted during his campaign the Indian-American community’s emphasis on honesty and integrity in leadership. His parents had also worked in the IT sector, according to the PTI. Ramaswami, who has studied at Stanford University, has also made a career in election security, technology law and policy research.

He also accused Still of showing lack of leadership and integrity by allegedly trying to overturn Georgian votes during the elections of 2020.

“Our community will never forget Shawn Still’s utter lack of leadership and integrity when he tried to overturn Georgians’ votes in 2020,” he added.

It may be mentioned here that Still was one of the 18 people indicted along with former US president Donald Trump on charges that he had sought to illegally overturn the results of the 2020 presidential elections in the state. Last year, a three-person panel decided that he would not be suspended from the office despite the indictment, said an AP report.

Ramaswami, who is a native of Georgia, has been endorsed by Congresswoman Lucy MacBath of Georgia’s seventh Congressional district. The latter praised him saying he has the vision and experience to represent Georgians in the state legislature. McBath also called the seat where Ramaswami has locked horns with Still as the most competitive in the Peach State’s senate.
