THE unabated killings of people from the minority Hindu community by extremists in the Kashmir Valley have triggered a fresh round of exits of minority Hindus and Kashmiri Pandits from the region. Government employees who have been posted there are deeply worried over their security and have stressed time and again on the worsening situation in the union territory.
Some have even said that the situation in Kashmir today is worse than that in 1990 when several Kashmir Pandits had to flee the valley due to growing extremism.

The events in the valley have also seen a controversy erupting over Twitter under the hashtag #KashmiriMuslims where people are divided over the stance of the Muslim people who hail from Kashmir, India’s only Muslim-majority province.
Television journalist Rahul Shivshankar questioned the Kashmiri Muslims’ say on the situation, tweeting, “Kashmiri Muslims live, work, study and trade unhindered in different parts of India. They are our loved compatriots. They prosper and surely appreciate the opportunity. So why aren’t they speaking up to secure that right for Hindus in Kashmir?”

To that, one responded saying why would the Muslims speak out when the government was not doing anything. The user even put the onus on Indian prime minister Narendra Modi and home minister Amit Shah.
“Why should Kashmiri Muslims speak out when the govt of the day does nothing? The onus to deal with this crisis is on Mr Modi and Mr Shah and NOT on Kashmiri Muslims,” the user identified as Madhumita countered Shivshankar.

Former journalist Monica Verma echoed Shivshankar’s viewpoint tweeting, “Kashmiri Muslims are welcomed across India in various educational institutions and jobs. It is highly immoral on their part to stay silent as the targeted killings of Hindus go on in valley. Speak up, It’s High Time”

Another user said it was impossible for the terrorists to carry out such targeted killings without the support of Kashmiri Muslims.
“Impossible to execute such targetted killings without ordinary Kashmiri muslims guiding the killers. We will award this sick society with more funds to “win hearts and minds”. Meanwhile the Kashmir model will spread to every area where the demographic tipping point occurs”

Retired Indian armyman Gaurav Arya said in a tweet, “Terrorists are killing both Hindus & Muslims in Kashmir.
The Kashmiri Muslims who are being killed are targeted because the terrorists see them as loyal to India. Hindus are being killed because they are Hindu.”

Journalist Umar Safi said it was not true that the Kashmir Muslims were turning a blind eye to the killings in the Valley. Posting pictures of protests against the killings on Twitter, he said, “Kashmiri Muslims take to streets in Srinagar asking for killing of Hindus to be stopped. “We have right to protect Pandits in Kashmir,” their placard reads.”
