INDIA on Wednesday (12) said ahead of a debate in the European Union (EU) parliament on the tense situation in its northeastern state of Manipur that the matter is something “absolutely” internal.
A motion for a resolution on the situation in Manipur, where more than 140 people have been killed in ethnic clashes since May 3, was tabled in the EU parliament in Brussels, Belgium, and it was set to be taken up on Wednesday.
The development comes a day ahead of Modi’s visit to France where he will take part in the Bastille Day Parade as the guest of honour.
Indian foreign secretary Vinay Kwatra said EU parliamentarians concerned are being reached out and it has been made clear to them that it is a matter “absolutely” internal to India.
Manipur has been witnessing violent clashes, especially between Kuki and Meitei communities for close to two months.
The opposition parties have been accusing the government of failing to contain the violence. “This is a matter totally internal to India,” Kwatra said, replying to a question on the matter at a press conference. He said New Delhi is aware about what is happening at the EU parliament in Brussels.
“We made a reach-out to the concerned EU parliamentarians. But we made it very clear that this is a matter absolutely internal to India,” he said.
Recently, India’s opposition Congress slammed US ambassador to India Eric Garcetti after he offered to help in the Manipur crisis and accused the Narendra Modi government of remaining tightlipped on the matter.
