Arvind Kejriwal, the chief minister of the Indian state of Delhi, on Monday (2) condemned the incident in which a 20-year-old woman was killed after her two-wheeler was hit by a car and her body was dragged over a few kilometres between the capital’s Sultanpuri and Kanjhawala area early on Sunday (1).
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader took to Twitter to say that the incident was “shameful” and that the culprits should be “punished severely”.
“What happened to our sister in Kanjhawala is very shameful. I hope that the culprits will be punished severely,” he said in a tweet in Hindi. Five men have been arrested in connection with the woman’s death.
कंझावला में हमारी बहन के साथ जो हुआ, वो बेहद शर्मनाक है। मैं उम्मीद करता हूँ कि दोषियों को कड़ी से कड़ी सज़ा दी जाएगी। pic.twitter.com/Mmuuf8HnWl

Spoke to Hon’ble LG on Kanjhawala incident. Requested him to take exemplary action against culprits, strictest sections of IPC shud be slapped against them. No leniency shud be showed even if they have high political connections.

The incident happened on the New Year’s Day and a video purportedly showing the woman’s body without clothes and broken legs emerged on social media to fuel the outrage.
The authenticity of the video could not be checked.
According to a Press Trust of India report, the footage led to claims that the woman was raped and murdered, but the police said it was an accident.
They also said the victim’s body was sent to Delhi’s Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital for post-mortem. According to them, the victim’s leg got entangled in one of the wheels of the car and she was dragged for around four kilometres. Five men, who were travelling in the car, were arrested, the police added.
The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) issued a notice to the city police in connection with the incident.
Delhi lieutenant governor (LG) VK Saxena also condemned the incident saying his head hung in shame over the “inhuman” crime.
“My head hangs in shame over the inhuman crime in Kanjhawla-Sultanpuri today morning and I am shocked at the monstrous insensitivity of the perpetrators.

Have been monitoring with @CPDelhi and the accused have been apprehended. All aspects are being thoroughly looked into.— LG Delhi (@LtGovDelhi) January 1, 2023
Even as every possible support/help and beyond, to the family of the victim will be ensured, I appeal to all to not resort to opportunistic scavenging. Let's together work towards a more responsible and sensitive society.
