Israel-Hamas war: Any attempt by Modi to mediate is welcome, says former Israeli intel chief

The former intelligence chief also said a combination of several operational failures could be a reason why Israel’s much-vaunted intelligence network could not predict or prevent the attacks.

WHILE Israel and Hamas, a Palestinian militant outfit, have locked horns over a deadly conflict, a former chief of the Jewish state’s military intelligence told Indian channel NDTV on Tuesday (10) that Israel would welcome a “Modi miracle” when asked whether India could play a role in brokering peace between the warring sides.

At the moment, there is not even a sign of a ceasefire, let alone peace, even as more than 1,600 people have been killed in the clashes and over 6,000 injured.

Major General Amos Yadlin (retired) told the Indian channel that Hamas is not eager for any negotiation with Israel and is slaughtering women and children. He then added that if Indian prime minister Narendra Modi could help achieve the miracle (peace), they would hold their finger for them.

Modi extended solidarity to Israel on Saturday (7) after Hamas conducted coordinated attacks on Israel. On Monday (9), he reiterated the support saying the people of India were with Israel after a telephonic talk with his Israeli counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu who briefed him about the situation in his country.

“Israel and India relations are very important. These are two nations that got independence at the same time… have similar traditions. We are two nations that have enemies at the border… you have Pakistan, China, and we have the terrorists from Gaza, Hezbollah, and Iran and Syria,” Yadlin was quoted as saying by NDTV.

“There is a lot of the same political background, and Israel is helping India a lot. We are giving weapons that you used to get from Russia. We welcome any attempt by your PM to mediate…”

The former intelligence chief also said a combination of several operational failures could be a reason why Israel’s much-vaunted intelligence network could not predict or prevent the deadly attacks launched by Hamas.

“Signals were not picked up, sensors were neutralised. The consequences were catastrophic,” he said when asked why some of Israel’s world-renowned agencies did not act on time to prevent the kind of mayhem it turned out to be.

While Yadlin said that Israel has been “very effective” in preventing attacks by Hamas, he also added that Hamas had changed tactics to counter the Israelis’ digital and physical surveillance.
