Back in 2010, Band Baaja Baaraat took Bollywood by storm, marking the breakout debut of Ranveer Singh opposite Anushka Sharma. Their on-screen chemistry as Bittoo and Shruti was so electric that fans began speculating about a possible romance off-screen.
But in a candid 2011 interview with NDTV, Anushka Sharma shut down those rumours with a blunt and revealing answer—one that remains memorable even today.
When asked why Ranveer had said she would “kill her boyfriend,” Anushka laughed but didn’t hold back. She said, “Ranveer can’t be a boyfriend. He is a very fine guy, very hardworking, but he is quite caught up in himself at the moment—which he should be, it’s his first film, and he’s entering the industry. I understand that, and that’s why I say I can’t ever date him.”
She elaborated further, offering a glimpse into what she truly values in a relationship. “Many people ask me why we don’t see each other. And I say this is the reason. I want a boyfriend who, at the end of the day, doesn’t just tell me how his day went, but also asks me how my day was—which he’ll never do. So, I cannot date him.” It was a statement that revealed her emotional depth and also hinted at Ranveer’s then all-consuming focus on launching his career.
Though their romantic equation never materialised, Anushka Sharma and Ranveer Singh did maintain a professional rapport. Years later, they reunited on screen in Dil Dhadakne Do (2015), where they played characters within a star-studded ensemble that included Priyanka Chopra, Anil Kapoor, Shefali Shah, and Farhan Akhtar. The film was a critical and commercial success, reaffirming their compatibility as co-stars.
Today, both Anushka and Ranveer have moved on to fulfilling personal and professional lives. Anushka married cricket icon Virat Kohli in a dreamy Italian ceremony in 2017. The couple are now parents to daughter Vamika and recently welcomed their second child, Akaay, in 2024. Meanwhile, Ranveer Singh found lasting love with fellow actor Deepika Padukone. The couple tied the knot in 2018 and became parents to a baby girl, Dua, in 2024.
While Anushka Sharma has taken a step back from acting since her last appearance in Zero opposite Shah Rukh Khan, she continues to produce content under her banner Clean Slate Filmz and is expected to return to the screen soon. Ranveer Singh, meanwhile, remains in the spotlight. He was last seen in Singham Again and has two major releases lined up—Aditya Dhar’s Dhurandhar featuring R. Madhavan and Sanjay Dutt, and Farhan Akhtar’s Don 3, one of the most anticipated films of the year.
This candid moment from the early days of their career serves as a reminder that not all successful on-screen pairs are meant to be more than co-stars off-screen—and that sometimes, clarity is the best kind of closure.
