ACTOR Ananya Panday emphasized that while women have historically endured challenges, what has shifted is their increased willingness to speak out.

She believes that raising awareness is essential but stresses the importance of concrete actions to bring about societal change.

“It’s always been dark times for women, now we are just speaking about it a lot more. There’s one thing talking about it, but the more important thing is doing something about it,” Panday told PTI.

Panday, who will next be seen in the web series “Call Me Bae,” highlighted the need for systemic changes, particularly through legislation. “The more important step is actually laws changing, and the government making actionable changes to this,” she added.

Her co-star, Niharika Lyra Dutt, noted that it’s encouraging to see women in the film industry speaking up about inequality.

“The problems in the film industry and disparity have always been the case. Now, people are talking about it, standing up against it, voices are being emboldened, and that’s wonderful because that leads to systemic change,” Dutt said.

Muskkaan Jaferi, another actor in “Call Me Bae,” mentioned that the industry has introduced measures like internal complaints committees and strict rules on workplace conduct, which are crucial steps in empowering women to speak out.

Their comments come against the backdrop of recent crimes against women, including the rape and murder of a Kolkata doctor and the sexual assault on two kindergarten girls in Maharashtra, as well as revelations from the Justice K Hema Committee report on sexual harassment in the Malayalam cinema industry.
