Amid protests against India’s diplomatic missions in various corners of the world in the wake of the manhunt for Khalistan separatist leader Amritpal Singh in the northern state of Punjab, the chief of an India-based women’s rights body has alleged that the daughter of the chief minister of Punjab was receiving death threats in the US and urged the Indian embassy in that country to ensure her safety.

Swati Maliwal, chairperson of Delhi Commission for Women, on Friday (31) said about the incident in a tweet and called it “an act of extreme cowardice”.

Seerat Kaur, daughter of Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann, lives in Seattle where she allegedly received the threats amid protests against the Punjab Police’s actions against Singh.

“Read reports of Punjab CM Shri Bhagwant Mann’s daughter receiving death threats in the USA. It is an act of extreme cowardice. I appeal to the Indian Embassy US to ensure her safety,” Maliwal tweeted.

A lawyer mentioned about it in a Facebook post saying Khalistan supporters had called Seerat and abused her. In his post, he asked the protesters whether they would get Khalistan by threatening and abusing children.

“Are you going to get Khalistan this way by threatening and abusing children… Such people are a blot on Sikhism,” the lawyer wrote.

The post was confirmed by Seerat Kaur’s mother Inderpreet Kaur Grewal, Mann’s first wife. She also thanked the lawyer for supporting her family.

Mann, who is from the Aam Aadmi Party and became the chief minister in 2022, and Grewal got separated in 2015 and last year, Mann married Gurpreet Kaur. His children attended his wedding.

Grewal and Dilshan, her son with Mann, live with Seerat in the US.
