WORLD Bank president Ajay Banga is scheduled to visit India next week for the first time since assuming his role as the head of the global lender last month. He will attend the G20 finance ministers’ and central bank governors’ Meeting in Ahmedabad in Gujarat.

Banga, an Indian-American who was born in Pune, is the first person of colour to lead either the World Bank or the International Monetary Fund.

In May, the executive directors of the World Bank chose Banga as the 14th president for a five-year term, following his nomination by US president Joe Biden.

India currently holds the presidency of the G20, an intergovernmental forum comprising major developed and developing economies.

Gujarat will host four G20 meetings during the first two weeks of July. The gatherings will provide an opportunity for business representatives to share their perspectives, insights, and policy recommendations on various economic and business-related matters. They are also expected to play a significant role in shaping global economic agendas and policies.

The visit of Banga, 63, to India for the G20 meeting reflects the significance of India’s current presidency and the country’s growing role in global economic affairs. It also highlights the leadership and representation of individuals from diverse backgrounds in key positions within international financial institutions.
