INDIA’S NATIONAL Investigation Agency (NIA) will probe attacks on Indian diplomatic missions in Canada and the US. The special cell of Delhi Police has registered two separate cases on the attacks under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, a stringent anti-terror law.
NDTV cited sources as saying the Indian home ministry will soon transfer the cases to the NIA. First information reports (FIR) have been filed on the attacks.
The elite investigating agency is already probing the attack on the Indian high commission in London which took place on March 19 after registering a case over the insult of the Indian Tricolour. NIA officials have reached London to carry out the investigation and the agency has also released photographs of more than 40 suspected attackers.
The attacks on the Indian diplomatic missions in the two North American nations also took place around the same time. The incidents happened when the police in India’s Punjab state launched a manhunt for separatist Sikh preacher Amritpal Singh who was arrested in April.
While a grenade was thrown during the protest at the Indian mission in Canada, prompting invoking of the UAPA and Explosive Act provisions in the FIR related to the case.
In the US, the Indian consulate in San Francisco was attacked by pro-Khalistan supporters, resulting in vandalism. The FIR filed in this case also includes provisions of the UAPA.
Earlier this week, Avtar Singh Khanda, a pro-Khalistan activist who was allegedly behind the pulling down of the Indian national flag at the mission in London and a close aide to Amritpal Singh, died in a hospital in the UK due to blood cancer. His supporters, however, alleged that Khanda was poisoned by the Indian security establishment.
