After cabinet reshuffle, Modi rejigs cabinet committees

DAYS after effecting a major reshuffle in the, the Narendra Modi government has reconstituted some powerful committees in the cabinet.
While Union ministers Smriti Irani, Bhupender Yadav and Sarbananda Sonowal were brought in as the new members of the Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs led by Modi, those like Arjun Munda, Virendra Kumar, Kiren Rijiju and Anurag Thakur were included in the reshuffled Cabinet Committee on Parliamentary Affairs, according to a notification issued by the Cabinet Secretariat on Monday (12) night.

However, no change was made in the composition of the country’s highest decision-making body on the security affairs – the Cabinet Committee on Security – and the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, which makes decisions on all important government appointments in the rank of joint secretary and above.

The members of the Cabinet Committee on Security include besides Modi, defence minister Rajnath Singh, Union home minister Amit Shah, finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman and external affairs minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar.

The two-member Appointments Committee of the Cabinet also includes Modi and Shah.

The rejigged Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs includes besides the prime minister, Singh, Shah, Sitharaman and other Union ministers like Nitin Gadkari, Narendra Singh Tomar, Piyush Goyal, Pralhad Joshi, Giriraj Singh, Mansukh Mandaviya. Irani, Sonowal and Yadav are the latest additions to the panel while former ministers Ravi Shankar Prasad and Harsh Vardhan have been excluded following their recent omission from the ministry.

The Cabinet Committee on Parliamentary Affairs include: Singh, Shah, Sitharaman, Tomar, Munda, Joshi, Rijiju, Thakur and Virendra Kumar. Union Ministers of State for Parliamentary Affairs Arjun Ram Meghwal and V Muraleedharan are special invitees to the committee. Earlier, Ravi Shankar Prasad and Prakash Javadekar were also part of it.

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs includes nine members and they are – Modi, Singh, Shah, Gadkari, Sitharaman, Tomar, Jaishankar, Goyal and Dharmendra Pradhan, the notification said. Previously, former ministers D V Sadananda Gowda and Prasad were also part of the committee.

The changed Cabinet Committee on Investment and Growth comprises besides Modi, Singh, Shah, Sitharaman, Gadkari and Goyal, new cabinet entrants Narayan Rane, Jyotiraditya Scindia and Ashwini Vaishnaw.

The Cabinet Committee on Employment and Skill Development include PM Modi, Singh, Shah, Sitharaman, Tomar, Goyal, Pradhan, Vaishnaw, Yadav and Hardeep Singh Puri. Special invitees in this committee include Gadkari, RCP Singh and G Kishan Reddy. Vaishnaw and Yadav are the new members while RCP Singh and Reddy are new special invitees.
