Singer Abhijeet Bhattacharya mocks Shah Rukh Khan, says ‘he sang, wrote, directed—was I even needed?’

Abhijeet, known for lending his voice to SRK in superhit tracks like Zara Sa Jhoom Loon Main, Baadshah O Baadshah, Tauba Tumhare Ye Ishaare, and Woh Ladki Jo Saabse Alag Hai, was once synonymous with the romantic and peppy image that Shah Rukh portrayed on screen.

Bollywood playback singer Abhijeet Bhattacharya, once considered the musical voice of Shah Rukh Khan, has once again taken a pointed dig at the superstar. In a recent interview with ANI, Abhijeet reflected on his complicated relationship with the actor and made remarks that indicate unresolved bitterness. Although the two collaborated on many iconic tracks during the 1990s and early 2000s, their personal and professional equation appears to have become strained over time.

However, in the new conversation, Abhijeet hinted at being overshadowed and underappreciated for his contributions.

Asked about their “awkward” dynamic, Abhijeet remarked with sarcasm, “We’re like twins—it seems that way with our voice. But now I realise all these songs aren’t mine. Shah Rukh sang them, Shah Rukh wrote them, composed the music, made the film, and even became the cinematographer. Sab kuch woh hi hai toh bhai main kya karun? (If he’s everything, then what am I supposed to do?)”

This isn’t the first time Abhijeet has openly expressed his frustration about his work being attributed solely to the actor on screen. His comments reflect the deeper issue many playback singers have long struggled with—being in the shadows while actors get the limelight for hit songs.

Referring to the 2003 film Chalte Chalte, Abhijeet pointed out that the music, not the movie itself, made an impact. “Chalte Chalte film average hi thi, gaane hit the. Sirf gaane hi hit the, par ab kya kar sakte hain (The film was average, it was the songs that were hits—but what can be done),” he said, highlighting how his track Tauba Tumhare Ye Ishaare perfectly matched Shah Rukh’s expressions on screen.

Despite his recent critiques, Abhijeet’s legacy in the Indian music industry remains strong. With over 1000 songs sung in Hindi and regional languages, the singer has built a name for himself over decades. His work has earned him accolades including Filmfare Awards and Zee Cine Awards, and he continues to be remembered for his silken voice and emotional range.

While Shah Rukh Khan has remained silent on Abhijeet’s repeated jibes, the tension between the once-iconic actor-singer duo continues to intrigue Bollywood fans. Whether the relationship will ever mend remains uncertain, but Abhijeet’s latest comments have certainly reignited interest in the untold dynamics behind some of Bollywood’s most memorable songs.
