Aamir Khan’s audition for the role of SI Shyam Manohar in Laapataa Ladies has surfaced online, sparking discussions among fans. The actor, who also produced the film directed by Kiran Rao, had expressed interest in playing the cop but ultimately stepped back after witnessing Ravi Kishan’s screen test.

The footage, shared on Aamir’s new YouTube channel Aamir Khan Talkies, showcases his attempt to bring the character to life with distinct mannerisms, body language, and a paan-chewing style. However, reactions suggest that audiences believe Kiran Rao made the right choice by casting Ravi Kishan instead.

The audition tape quickly gained traction on social media, with fans analyzing Aamir’s performance. While some praised his dedication, most viewers agreed that Ravi Kishan’s portrayal of SI Shyam Manohar was far more impactful. One user commented, “Aamir sir isn’t suited for this role. Ravi Kishan did a far better job.” Another added, “Aamir is a great actor, but Ravi Kishan truly owned that character.”

Many fans felt that Aamir’s presence would have made the storyline predictable, as audiences would expect his character to follow a conventional redemption arc. “If Aamir played the role, the surprise of the bad cop turning good would have been lost,” one fan explained. Some reactions were even more critical, with a viewer stating, “Ravi Kishan ke samne pani kam chai (Aamir’s performance is nowhere near Ravi Kishan’s level).”

Director Kiran Rao had previously revealed that Aamir was excited about the role but stepped back after seeing Ravi Kishan’s screen test. Recognizing that Kishan was a better fit, Aamir chose to support the film as a producer rather than as an actor. His decision has now been validated by the overwhelmingly positive response to Ravi Kishan’s performance.

Released in December 2023, Laapataa Ladies tells the story of two brides who are accidentally swapped in rural India during the 1990s. The film, featuring newcomers Sparsh Srivastava, Nitanshi Goel, and Pratibha Ranta, won critical acclaim for its storytelling and performances. At the recent IIFA Awards, the film secured 10 trophies, including Best Supporting Actor for Ravi Kishan.

Despite Aamir’s audition resurfacing, fans continue to celebrate Ravi Kishan’s portrayal, reinforcing the notion that the right casting choice was made.
