INDIAN prime minister Narendra Modi on Friday (30) urged his countrymen to share inputs for his upcoming Independence Day speech on August 15, saying their thoughts will reverberate from the ramparts of the Red Fort, Delhi. It is a tradition for India’s prime ministers to deliver a speech at the historical monument since the country attained independence from the British in 1947.

In a tweet, the Bharatiya Janata Party leader asked the people to give their inputs on MyGov.in, a citizen engagement platform.

“Your thoughts will reverberate from the ramparts of the Red Fort. What are your inputs for PM @narendramodi’s speech on 15th August? Share them on @mygovindia,” the prime minister’s office tweeted.

The portal said that the prime minister in his Independence Day speech lays out the government’s programmes and policies and it will be no different this year. “Similarly, this year too the Prime Minister invites citizens to contribute their inputs for New India. So, now you have the opportunity to tell your ideas, give word to your suggestions and crystallize your vision. PM Narendra Modi will pick up some of the ideas in his speech on 15th August,” it said.

This will be Modi’s eighth Independence Day speech since 2014 when he first delivered it after becoming the prime minister. This year, India will celebrate its 75th Independence Day.

This is not the first time that the leader has directly asked for ideas from his fellow Indians to consider. The ‘Mann Ki Baat’ programme on which Modi speaks time and again is another example where the prime minister seeks ideas and suggestions from the citizens to be considered by various departments of his government.

‘Vaccinate school staff’

Moments after Modi’s invitation came, people started sharing their ideas on social media. One Twitter user Sumeet Mehta wrote, “… Declare a mission program to vaccinate all teaching & non-teaching staff in schools …Children are the future & they need peer interactions, they need to meet in person, they need to be back in schools. That’ll be your biggest gift to the future!”

Another Twitter user Akash Singh wrote, “Dear Prime Minister Sir. Population explosion is becoming a major problem in India. In the coming few years, the population of India will be 150 crores… Hon’ble Prime Minister is requested to say something on population explosion from Red Fort on this Independence Day.”
