INDIAN finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday (24) said the country’s honest taxpayers deserved to be recognised for dutifully paying their due share of taxes. She also praised the income tax department for successfully implementing various reforms.
In her message to the department on the 161st anniversary of the Income Tax Day, Sitharaman lauded the department for working towards simplifying its procedures and processes and making its functioning hassle-free, fair and transparent.

“The minister observed that the honest taxpayers deserve to be recognized for the contribution they are making to the progress of the nation by dutifully paying their due share of taxes… She also lauded taxpayers for discharging their compliance obligations despite the difficulties caused by the pandemic,” an official statement said.

Union minister of state of finance Pankaj Chaudhary said most of the processes and compliance requirements have been shifted to online platforms and the need for the taxpayers to visit tax offices in person has been either eliminated or minimised.
He also said that the interaction with the taxpayers is now marked by a spirit of trust and respect, relying more on voluntary compliance.
Revenue secretary Tarun Bajaj also praised the department saying it did well in adapting itself to the emergent changes in the economy and having been able to achieve a healthy growth in collection of taxes.
J B Mohapatra, chairman of the Central Board of Direct Taxes, which is a part of the revenue department in the finance ministry, applauded the tax officers for their collective efforts and fulfilling their twin role as the nation’s revenue-earning arm and provider of taxpayer services.
