THE DAUGHTER of a Punjab politician, who went missing three days ago in Canada, was found dead under mysterious circumstances in Ottawa.

The Indian High Commission in Ottawa on Monday (28) confirmed the death of Vanshika Saini (21), the daughter of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Davinder Saini from Punjab’s Mohali district.

She had gone to Canada two years ago to pursue higher studies after completing her school education in Dera Bassi.

The High Commission said the Canadian police have taken up a case and begun investigation.

Vanshika’s family in Punjab has urged the Indian government to help bring back the body.

She went missing last Friday night after she left her residence at 7 Majestic Drive in Ottawa to view a rental room, according to a social media post by an Indo-Canadian association.

Her phone was switched off at approximately 11.40 pm that night and she missed an important exam the next day.

Vanshika’s father, who is the AAP’s block president in Dera Bassi, said she was a school topper and wanted to do something big in her life.

The family is awaiting the post-mortem report to know about the cause of death.

Davinder is associated with AAP MLA from Dera Bassi Kuljit Singh Randhawa.

The High Commission said it was in “close contact with the bereaved kin and local community associations to provide all possible assistance”.

The Hindu Community in Ottawa has requested the police chief to intervene and speed up the investigation.

This comes close on heels of the death of another Indian woman student in Ontario, after she was struck by a stray bullet while waiting at a bus stop in Hamilton.

The deceased, Harsimrat Randhawa, was a student at Mohawk College in Hamilton.
