In a deeply emotional and heartfelt episode of her podcast Confessions of a Female Founder, Meghan Markle offered a rare glimpse into her personal struggles with miscarriage, motherhood, and stepping away from the spotlight. The second episode featured Girls Who Code and Moms First founder Reshma Saujani, as the two women engaged in an honest conversation about ambition, loss, parenting, and healing.
Opening up about a painful chapter in her life, Meghan addressed the topic of miscarriage—something both she and Reshma have publicly endured. “I’ll bring this up if you are comfortable talking about it… I have spoken about the miscarriage we experienced,” Meghan said during the podcast. “And I think in some parallel way, when you have to learn to detach from the thing that you have so much promise and hope for and to be able to be OK at a certain point to let something go, something go that you plan to love for a long time.”
Her words resonated deeply with Reshma, who replied, “Yeah. I feel like you are reading my diaries… I don’t think anyone has said it that way for me but that’s right.” She recounted her own experiences of struggling to conceive due to autoimmune issues and the devastating routine of hearing a doctor say, “you have no heartbeat.”
Reshma revealed that despite the grief, she kept showing up for work and events, even when it felt unbearable. “I should have just gone home and curled up with my husband. But I would just take a breath, show up in a living room or on a stage, and perform. Often I was just performing to these children that I desperately wanted. I got really good at that, but it was eating me up inside.”
The podcast also explored the emotional weight of motherhood. Meghan, now a mother of two with Prince Harry, confessed how tough it is to take a break. “Oh my gosh, I love being a mom so much, it’s my favourite thing. But sometimes, I just need a minute. And then the second I step away, I’m scrolling through pictures of them on my phone.”
She added with affection, “My husband says, ‘My love, just take a break, go work out, take a bath.’ And I say, ‘I know, but I just want to cuddle them.’ That’s the parenting paradox. It’s so full-on, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything.”
Both Meghan and Reshma also reflected on how the pandemic blurred the lines between work and parenting, amplifying the emotional and physical load on mothers. Meghan acknowledged that stepping away from the public eye has helped her gain clarity and purpose. Speaking about her decision to leave royal life and fame, she said, “When you don’t have power, you’re not important anymore. Being able to let go and give someone else that light… that was the point.”
She continued, “It takes a lot of growth to not feel rattled when the phone’s not ringing, to not feel shaken when you’ve stepped out of the light. But in doing so, you’re stepping into your own light—and creating space for someone else. That might be the larger purpose of all of us being here.”
This episode follows Meghan’s first installment featuring Bumble founder Whitney Wolfe Herd, where Meghan shared her frightening experience with postpartum preeclampsia—a rare but serious condition. “You’re juggling everything, and the world doesn’t know what’s happening quietly. And in the quiet, you’re still trying to show up—for your kids, for everyone.”
With Confessions of a Female Founder, Meghan Markle continues to peel back layers of fame, vulnerability, and womanhood, offering a raw and empowering platform for honest conversation.
