Veteran actress Sharmila Tagore has always been the graceful matriarch of the Pataudi family, often keeping a low profile when it comes to commenting on the careers of her famous children and grandchildren.

However, in a recent candid interview with Anandabazar Patrika, the iconic star offered a heartfelt and honest review of her grandchildren Sara Ali Khan and Ibrahim Ali Khan, making headlines for her unfiltered thoughts—especially on Ibrahim’s much-anticipated but poorly received debut film Nadaaniyan.

Belonging to a lineage steeped in Bollywood royalty, expectations were high for Ibrahim Ali Khan, the son of Saif Ali Khan and Amrita Singh, when he stepped into the limelight with his debut movie Nadaaniyan. Unfortunately, the film did not strike a chord with critics or audiences.

While the internet was quick to troll the film and Ibrahim’s performance, his grandmother Sharmila Tagore took a more nuanced and kind view—though she didn’t shy away from calling a spade a spade.

In the interview, Sharmila Tagore stated, “Sara and Ibrahim are doing a wonderful job. Ibrahim’s film was not good, but he still looks very handsome. He has tried his best. These things shouldn’t really be said in front of everyone, but honestly, the picture isn’t great. Ultimately, the picture has to be good.” Her remarks reflect both a grandmother’s affection and a seasoned actor’s critical eye, offering constructive insight rather than blind praise.

While Nadaaniyan may not have lived up to the hype, Sharmila’s comments underscore that Ibrahim has potential. And his career may still be in its early innings. He is currently working on his next film, Sarzameen, a more high-profile project backed by Karan Johar and featuring powerhouse performer Kajol. Expectations remain high, but with better direction and a stronger script, Ibrahim may yet carve his niche in Bollywood.

On the other hand, Sara Ali Khan, who made a promising debut with Kedarnath in 2018 opposite the late Sushant Singh Rajput, has had a mixed run in her career. Some of her performances won applause, while others fell flat at the box office. Sharmila, however, remains confident in her granddaughter’s talent. “Sara is a good actress. She works very hard and is capable of doing a lot more. She’ll also achieve that,” she said, sounding every bit the proud and supportive grandmother.

Sara is currently gearing up for Metro… In Dino, directed by Anurag Basu and co-starring Aditya Roy Kapur. The film, which is said to be a contemporary take on urban relationships, could offer Sara the kind of meaty role she has long deserved.

As both Ibrahim and Sara navigate the challenges of showbiz, Sharmila Tagore’s grounded perspective is a reminder that legacy might open doors, but it’s talent, timing, and the quality of the film that truly matter in the long run.
