In a candid and emotional interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, acclaimed actor Tillotama Shome opened up about a deeply disheartening experience with a film director who dismissed her potential to earn well in the industry. Known for her power-packed performances in Pataal Lok 2, Lust Stories 2, and the recently released Baksho Bondi, Shome’s vulnerability struck a chord with fans and industry peers alike.

Recalling a wrap party conversation from a previous project, Tillotama shared how a casual discussion about aspirations led to an unsettling moment. When asked what she really wanted, the actor mentioned a dream car, which she could afford only if paid a certain amount for a film. The director, in what appeared to be a well-meaning tone, replied, “I’m so sorry to break this to you, but you’re never going to earn that kind of money. It’s unfair, but that’s how this industry is. You’re very talented, but unfortunately, you’ll never make that much.”

This statement, though veiled in concern, left a lasting impression on her. “It stayed with me,” Tillotama admitted, visibly emotional during the interview. But instead of accepting that bleak forecast, she used it as fuel.

Shome went on to talk about her next project—one that felt creatively and emotionally fulfilling. Despite loving the script, she remained firm about being paid what she deserved. “I negotiated for four months,” she said. Her persistence paid off—literally. She not only secured the role but was paid double the amount she had previously mentioned at the party.

She didn’t let the moment pass quietly either. In a bold and graceful move, she informed the director who doubted her, saying, “Thought you should know, before you tell another actor what they can or can’t do.”

Tillotama credited her inner circle, especially actor Jim Sarbh, for reminding her of her worth. The two share a strong friendship, recently working together on the Bengali film Baksho Bondi, which Jim also produced. “I’m grateful for my friends who always see me and push me to fight for what’s right,” she said.

Her story resonated across social media, with users applauding her courage and tenacity. The actress, who began her journey with Mira Nair’s Monsoon Wedding in 2001, has carved out a niche for herself with complex and memorable roles. Apart from Pataal Lok 2, she’s also received acclaim for Tribhuvan Mishra: CA Topper and Kota Factory: Season 3.
