AN INDIAN national was detained by Qatari authorities on January 1 in connection with an ongoing investigation, but the charges against him is still unknown.
Amit Gupta is the country head of Tech Mahindra in Kuwait and Qatar and his family in India say they still don’t know what crime he is accused of.
The Indian mission in Qatar said it is aware of his detention and providing all assistance to him.
They said the mission has been in touch with the family, the lawyer representing Gupta and Qatari authorities on a regular basis.
“Our embassy continues to provide all possible assistance in the matter and is closely following the case,” a source told PTI.
But with charges against him unknown, his family is going through a lot of suffering.
The Qatari authorities have allowed Gupta to speak to his family in India once in a week for five minutes.
Most often, Gupta breaks down during calls and claims he is innocent.
Gupta’s parents travelled to Doha in February, and the Indian embassy had helped them meet him.
He told them that he hasn’t been questioned by investigators in Qatar yet.
Amit Gupta’s wife Aakanksha Goyal told BBC that she has written to prime minister Narendra Modi’s office to highlight the family’s plight.
The letter was acknowledged on February 18 and referred to India’s foreign ministry, but nothing has happened since then.
Akanksha claims she finds it tough to answer questions from their children, aged 11 and four.
