The highly anticipated trailer for L2: Empuraan, the sequel to the 2019 Malayalam blockbuster Lucifer, was released ahead of schedule after an unexpected leak. Directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran, the political action drama sees the return of Mohanlal as the enigmatic Stephen Nedumpally, also known as Khureshi Ab’raam.
The gripping trailer has already generated immense excitement, with industry stalwarts such as Rajinikanth, SS Rajamouli, and Ram Gopal Varma showering praise on the film.
The nearly four-minute-long trailer offers a thrilling preview of the film’s expansive narrative. It opens with Sachin Khedekar’s character, PK Ramdas, declaring that his true legacy lies not with his children but with his followers.
Meanwhile, Tovino Thomas’ Jathin Ramdas now leads his party amid political sabotage, while Manju Warrier’s Priyadarshini Ramdas raises questions about the value of blood relations versus human life.
As chaos unfolds, Khureshi is summoned to restore order in ‘God’s own country.’ Unlike Lucifer, this sequel dives deeper into Khureshi’s past and the shadowy organization he operates within. The trailer showcases action-packed sequences spanning multiple locations, including Turkey, London, France, and Yemen, culminating in a lingering question—who is Stephen Nedumpally? This time, the film promises to unravel the mystery.
Following the trailer’s release, several prominent filmmakers and actors took to social media to express their admiration.
Superstar Rajinikanth shared the Tamil version of the trailer on X (formerly Twitter), writing, “Watched the trailer of my dear Mohan’s @Mohanlal and @PrithviOfficial’s film #Empuraan .. fantastic work, congratulations!!! I wish the team all the best for the release. God bless.” Prithviraj responded with gratitude, saying, “Thank you Superstar!!! @rajinikanth Will forever cherish this Sir!”

Director SS Rajamouli, known for his grand cinematic spectacles, praised the Telugu version of the trailer, stating, “#EMPURAAN trailer hooked me from the very first shot… @Mohanlal sir’s commanding presence is truly magnetic! Massive scale, stunning action—this already feels like a blockbuster @PrithviOfficial. Wishing the #L2E team a grand release on March 27!”
Renowned filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma shared his thoughts on the Hindi version, writing, “In sheer SCALE #Empuraan looks 10 times BIGGER, ULTRA RICH in its CHARACTERS, and ULTRA GRAND in its ACTION… The LAST shot of the TRAILER is a KILLER, very SYMBOLIC of the main MAN behind LUCIFER @PrithviOfficial.”
Alongside Mohanlal and Prithviraj Sukumaran, the film features Tovino Thomas, Manju Warrier, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Abhimanyu Singh, Jerome Flynn, and Eriq Ebouaney in key roles. The trailer hints at their significant contributions to the film’s intense narrative. Written by Murali Gopy, L2: Empuraan is jointly produced by Antony Perumbavoor and Gokulam Gopalan under Aashirvad Cinemas and Sree Gokulam Movies.
Scheduled for a grand theatrical release on March 27, the film will be released in Malayalam, Telugu, Hindi, Kannada, and Tamil. Dil Raju’s SVC Cinemas will distribute it in Telugu states, Anil Thadani’s AA Films in North India, and Hombale Films in Karnataka, while Sree Gokulam Movies will handle distribution in Tamil Nadu.
