Veteran Bollywood playback singer Udit Narayan, who recently found himself at the center of controversy over a viral video of him kissing a fan, has finally addressed the situation. Attending the trailer launch of the film Pintu Ki Pappi, Udit Narayan chose to take a light-hearted approach and joked about the incident that stirred social media backlash.
The singer, known for his evergreen hits like Dil To Pagal Hai, Kaho Naa Pyar Hai, and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, made a witty remark while speaking to choreographer Ganesh Acharya during the event. Referring to the film’s title Pintu Ki Pappi, Udit Narayan humorously said, “Khubsurat title hai aapki, Pintu Ki Pappi. Aur Udit Ki Pappi toh nahi?” (Your film’s title Pintu Ki Pappi is beautiful. It’s not Udit Ki Pappi, right?). His response left the attendees in splits.

The viral video in question, which surfaced last month, showed Udit Narayan performing on stage when a woman approached him for a selfie. As the woman tried to click a selfie, Udit Narayan leaned in and kissed her on her lips, leaving the fan visibly surprised. The video instantly went viral on social media and received major backlash from netizens, questioning the singer’s behavior.
Addressing the viral controversy at the event, Udit Narayan also clarified that the video was not recent but from two years ago in Australia. He said, “Ye bhi ek ittefaq hai ki abhi hi ye release hona tha… matlab music. Waise 2 saal pehle ka video hai Australia ka jo aap abhi dekh rahe hai.” (It’s a coincidence that the music is releasing now. The video that’s going viral is actually two years old from Australia).
However, the online outrage didn’t subside after his clarification. Following the viral incident, Udit Narayan also spoke to Hindustan Times, stating that the moment was merely a fan’s affectionate gesture that got blown out of proportion. In his response, he mentioned, “Fans itne deewane hote hain na. Hum log aise nahi hain, hum decent log hain. Some people encourage this and show their love through this. Udaake kya karna hai ab iss cheez ko?” (Fans are crazy. We are not like this, we are decent people. Some people encourage such moments and show their love. What’s the point of making a big deal out of this?).
Despite Udit Narayan’s clarification, social media remained divided over his actions. While some fans supported him, calling it an unintentional and harmless gesture, others criticized the singer for crossing personal boundaries. The incident reignited conversations about consent and appropriate behavior by public figures.
Meanwhile, the event’s highlight was Udit Narayan’s witty response that subtly turned his controversy into a light-hearted moment. His cheeky remark, “Aur Udit Ki Pappi toh nahi?”, has now become a talking point among netizens. Ganesh Acharya, who was present at the event, laughed off the comment, and the audience appreciated Udit Narayan’s ability to take humor in stride amid the ongoing controversy.
As Udit Narayan continues to receive mixed reactions, his fans hope that the controversy will eventually subside, allowing the singer to be remembered for his legendary contributions to Bollywood music rather than his controversial kiss.
