The comedian said the debate over good comedy should be matched by a similar conversation about the responsibilities of journalism

ACTOR and comedian Vir Das on Wednesday (12) called for a discussion on what constitutes good journalism, alongside the ongoing debate about what makes good comedy.
His remarks came in the wake of television media’s extensive coverage of influencer Ranveer Allahbadia, who has been facing criticism for his comments on parents and sex during an appearance on the YouTube comedy show “India’s Got Latent”.
Das expressed his views through an Instagram Stories post, where he criticised the media’s focus on the issue without naming Allahbadia directly.
He described the coverage as “a bunch of irrelevant mainstream media anchors bordering extinction coming together to take down new media that gets million more views.”
The comedian, known for his own controversies stemming from his stand-up acts, said the debate over good comedy should be matched by a similar conversation about the responsibilities of journalism.
“Whether you like the new media or not is irrelevant. That’s ALSO what’s happening here. And while we debate what good comedy is, please debate what good journalism is, and the news that they SHOULD be doing, the questions they SHOULD be asking, and who they should be asking them to,” Das wrote.
Das also reflected on how comedians handle audience feedback. “A good artist will take their feedback head down, mouth shut, and maybe evolve. Either way, the consequences of your comedy on your career and audience are pretty instant. That’s a natural process,” he added.
