INDUSTRIALIST Ratan Tata, who died in October last year, has in his will passed on assets worth ₹5 billion (£45.88 million) to Mohini Mohan Dutta, a Jamshedpur-based businessman, The Economic Times reported.
This has created a flutter because Dutta is little known to the Tata family or his inner circle.
Dutta, who is now in his 80s, will inherit the fortune once the high court certifies the will and it is likely to take six months.
His name in the will has sparked surprise and curiosity.
Dutta first met Ratan Tata in the early 1960s, when Tata was 24 years old, as per media reports.
He began his career at the Taj Group and later founded Stallion Travel Agency.
Dutta had an 80 per cent stake in Stallion, while Tata Industries owned the rest.
Stallion was merged with Taj Services, a division of the Taj Group of Hotels, in 2013 and it was later sold to Thomas Cook (India).
Dutta remains a director at the rebranded TC Travel Services and holds shares in Tata Group companies.
Dutta’s six-decade-long relationship with Ratan Tata appears to have been very personal.
His daughter also has ties to the Tata Group, having worked with Tata Trusts for nearly a decade after starting her career at Taj Hotels.
Dutta was present at Ratan Tata’s birth anniversary event in Mumbai in December 2024, which was attended by his closest associates.
