THE 2024 Academy Awards nominations were revealed Thursday (23), following delays caused by wildfires that disrupted parts of Los Angeles earlier this month.
Netflix’s “Emilia Perez,” “The Brutalist,” and “Wicked” emerged as frontrunners, with the Spanish-language musical leading the pack at 13 nominations.
The wildfires also led to the cancellation of several pre-Oscar celebrations, but organisers confirmed the ceremony will proceed on March 2 in Hollywood. “We will honour the talented filmmakers nominated today, pay tribute to our brave first responders, and celebrate the enduring spirit of Los Angeles and the film industry,” said Academy CEO Bill Kramer.
“Emilia Perez,” which follows the journey of a Mexican drug lord transitioning to a woman, will compete for best picture against “The Brutalist,” a film about a Holocaust survivor pursuing the American dream, and the “Wizard of Oz” prequel “Wicked.”
Other best picture nominees include “A Complete Unknown,” “Anora,” “Conclave,” “Dune: Part 2,” “I’m Still Here,” “Nickel Boys,” and “The Substance.”
The Oscars, hosted by Conan O’Brien and broadcast by Walt Disney’s ABC, will feature winners chosen by the Academy’s roughly 11,000 members from across the filmmaking industry.

“Anuja“, a New Delhi-set short film, has bagged a nomination in the Live Action Short category.
Directed by Adam J Graves and Suchitra Mattai, “Anuja” is pitted against “A Lien”, “I’m Not a Robot”, “The Last Ranger” and “The Man Who Could Not Remain Silent”.
“Anuja” follows a gifted nine-year-old Anuja, who must make a choice between education and factory work alongside her sister – a decision that will shape both their futures.
It stars Sajda Pathan and Ananya Shanbhag.
The film has two-time Oscar winning producer Guneet Monga on board as executive producer and Hollywood star-writer Mindy Kaling as producer.
Recently, actor Priyanka Chopra Jonas boarded the project as an executive producer.
