IN A recent interaction in Parliament, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra complimented actor and BJP MP Kangana Ranaut on her work and hair.
In response, Ranaut suggested that Gandhi watch her upcoming film, “Emergency”. Gandhi replied, “Okay, maybe,” Ranaut revealed during a video interview with PTI.
“Emergency”, set to release on January 17, focuses on the 21 months of the Emergency imposed by then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi’s grandmother.
Directed and produced by Ranaut, the film has been at the centre of controversies, including delays in its censor certification and allegations of misrepresenting the Sikh community.
Ranaut stated that her portrayal of Indira Gandhi took “no liberties” and was based on extensive research.
“I thought she was a very powerful person,” said Ranaut. “But when I did my research, I understood it was quite the contrary.” She described Gandhi as “weak,” “vulnerable,” and overly dependent on those around her, including her son Sanjay Gandhi.
The actor, who previously portrayed real-life figures like Rani of Jhansi in “Manikarnika” and J. Jayalalithaa in “Thalaivii”, said making “Emergency” came with significant challenges.
Delays in obtaining a censor certificate forced a rescheduling from its original release date of September 6, 2024. After the matter reached the Bombay High Court, the production banner agreed to comply with suggested changes, though Ranaut said she would have preferred the film to release as originally made.
The film features an ensemble cast, including Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, Milind Soman, Mahima Choudhary, and the late Satish Kaushik.
