FILMMAKER Hansal Mehta has highlighted the challenges faced by Payal Kapadia’s “All We Imagine as Light” in securing a digital release.
Despite being the first Indian film to win the prestigious Grand Prix award at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year, the movie has yet to find a platform for its OTT debut.
Sharing a review of the film by The New Yorker on social media, Mehta wrote, “And from what I hear a film that no OTT platform is buying. The harsh reality of making independent films in India. This is no country for the spectacular “All We Imagine As Light”. HOPE I’M PROVED WRONG.”
Distributed by Rana Daggubati’s Spirit Media, the Malayalam-Hindi feature premiered theatrically in Kerala and is set to release across India on November 22.
Responding to Mehta’s comments, Spirit Media assured viewers that the film would eventually reach broader audiences, stating, “We’re so grateful for all the support from the creative community! #AllWeImagineAsLight releasing in cinemas near you this Friday, Nov 22. And in due time on screens even closer home.”
The movie centres on Prabha, a nurse whose life is disrupted by an unexpected gift from her estranged husband, and Anu, her roommate, who struggles to find personal space in the city. Together, they embark on a transformative road trip with a friend, exploring themes of identity and dreams.
Starring Kani Kusruti, Divya Prabha, and Chhaya Kadam, “All We Imagine As Light” is an Indo-French co-production by petit chaos, Chalk & Cheese, and Another Birth.
