FILMMAKER Vikramaditya Motwane, known for his genre-spanning projects, views each new film or series as an opportunity for reinvention.

With an impressive filmography that ranges from his debut with “Udaan” to his recent work “CTRL”, Motwane emphasizes the joy he finds in the creative process rather than the end result.

“I like genre-hopping, if one wants to call it that. I find it liberating because I love the process so much. I love the process of filmmaking more than the end result. I really, really like making movies,” he told PTI.

Motwane’s diverse body of work includes “Lootera”, “Trapped”, “Bhavesh Joshi Superhero”, and popular streaming shows like “Sacred Games” and “Jubilee”.

He intentionally avoids staying within a single genre, preferring to try new things with each project. This approach, he said, allows him to work with new people and discover new facets of himself.

“Whatever I am making, a movie or a series, it is such an enjoyable process for me that I’m very happy to reinvent and rediscover. It just gives you a chance to be able to meet new people, see a new facet of your own self and learn something new,” he added.

When asked about the future of Jubilee, his successful period drama on the early years of Hindi cinema, he remained non-committal about a second season but acknowledged the show’s lasting impact.

“Forget about people, it has stayed in my heart for a long time,” he said, referring to Jubilee’s reception. “Some of the things get made, some get thrown away… but they stay in your mind and end up getting made at some point in time.”

Despite his success, Motwane notes that securing projects can still be challenging, especially for larger-scale productions. He highlighted how certain actors in his projects have gained further recognition, such as Rajkummar Rao in “Trapped” and Aparshakti Khurana in “Jubilee”.

“It gives you a lot of happiness,” he said, reflecting on their growth.

He also mentioned that his casting decisions, like choosing friend Anurag Kashyap for AK vs AK, have had unexpected results.

“Anurag Kashyap has got so much work (acting roles) after AK vs AK. He blames me for it,” Motwane said with a smile.
