A WOMAN scrap collector was raped allegedly by a man after he forced her to consume liquor in Agar Naka area of Madhya Pradesh’s Ujjain, a police official said on Thursday.

The incident occurred on a footpath in the Koyla Phatak area, one of the busiest intersections in the city, on Wednesday afternoon.

A video of the rape, shot by unidentified people, went viral on social media, Kotwali Area’s City Superintendent of Police (CSP) Om Prakash Mishra said.

“Accused Lokesh promised to marry her, made her drink liquor and then raped her on Wednesday. Some onlookers shot videos of the incident instead of stopping the crime. Lokesh later fled from the spot. After the effect of alcohol wore off, the woman filed a complaint and Lokesh was arrested,” he said.

The opposition Congress party has blamed the ruling BJP for the deteriorating law and order situation in the state.

In his tweet, state Congress chief Jitu Patwari pointed out that Ujjain is Madhya Pradesh chief minister Mohan Yadav’s hometown and added, “One can imagine the condition of the rest of the state.” (Agencies)
